World Studies
Bowen High School World Studies
Bowen’s World Studies is like a tour around our globe. South Chicago youth are growing up in a global society so we strive to give them the knowledge to succeed in this new reality. Our first semester develops reading, writing, and critical thinking skills through an ancient history lens. Students are able to identify main ideas and concepts, analyze maps, charts, tables, and use their ever-evolving critical thinking skills to identify global issues, trends, and patterns. These skills and knowledge are then taken into the world our students currently live in. In the second semester, we highlight the modern world. Students explore global human rights issues, giving them a view of South and North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
We also believe that it’s not just the content that matters, it’s how we deliver our instruction. Technology is a significant element in how we develop young people. We have classroom Chromebooks and use timely news, documentaries, and various websites to enhance our classroom environments.

What Makes Bowen’s World Studies Different?
At Bowen, we know that learners from South Chicago and other local neighborhoods come to us at all levels and abilities, so we offer this class with all learners in mind. Our World Studies class is offered to all freshmen as they transition into High School as freshmen. We work collaboratively with our English department to access students’ current skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking to ensure our students are effectively supported and challenged.
