Quantitative Literacy
Quantitative Literacy is a course offered as part of “Transitional Math”. The course is offered in partnership with the City Colleges of Chicago and follows a curriculum covered in their pre-credit math classes. The course uses the textbook “Math Lit: A Pathway to College Mathematics” by Kathleen Almy and Heather Foes. The class is best geared for students who intend on pursuing higher education, in some form, but are not interested in or prepared for AP Calculus.
Throughout the school year students traditionally learn a new concept every two days, take one to two quizzes per cycle of study, a final exam for each cycle, and complete two-four projects during the school year, all with the intention of preparing students for the cumulative end-of-year exam written by the City Colleges of Chicago.
Concepts covered in the course are often review for students, as they go over Pre-Algebra and Algebra concepts that are traditionally taught in 6th-9th grades. The course goes into greater depth with each skill and highly emphasizes students ability to apply the skills and concepts to real world situations.
