Mathematics

The Bowen High School Math Department offers courses aligned with the Integrated Math program. Currently, Bowen offers Integrated Math I, Integrated Math II, and Integrated Math III at the instructional, co-taught, regular, and honors levels. Participation in these courses satisfies the Chicago Public School graduation requirement for students, that students complete three-years of mathematics. A majority of courses (see exceptions below) are aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Math and Mathematical Practice. Each course is taught by a teacher with 10+ years of experience, and all teachers in the Department have earned Master’s Degrees in their field of study. 

During their Senior year, students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus A/B, Pre-Calculus, or Quantitative Literacy. Each course is designed to better prepare students to pursue higher education and be successful in any math class they may be required to take. AP Calculus curriculum aligns to the College Board's standards and provides instruction aligned to concepts covered on the cumulative end-of-year exam. The Pre-Calculus curriculum is aligned to CCSS and is intended to provide students with instruction aligned to concepts covered on university placement exams. Quantitative Literacy is offered through a partnership with the City Colleges of Chicago and covers concepts covered in their pre-credit math classes. By participating in Quantitative Literacy, students who earn a C or higher average will be placed directly into credit-bearing math classes at any City College or at Western Illinois University.
